1. Semaglutide is an FDA-approved injectable glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)
agonist that's administered once weekly to assist with weight management. Depending on your location (ex. Louisiana, Mississippi, etc) this may or may NOT be an option for you- please call for further information.
2. Tirzepatide is unique because it's the first combination of two classes of medications: a GLP-1 receptor agonist and a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor agonist. GLP-1 and GIP are both incretin hormones that result in feeling full sooner, slowing down digestion, and helping those who are insulin resistant.
GLP-1 is an incretin hormone that plays a role in your appetite and digestion. Incretins, hormones released by your small intestine, are sent out by your body after you've eaten a meal to help lower your blood sugar by triggering insulin and blocking other sources of sugar. It also slows down how quickly food leaves your stomach (called gastric emptying).
The result of these actions causes you to feel full, lowering your appetite and
causing you to lose weight. Medications like GLP-1 agonists are referred to as incretin mimetics since they "mimic" these effects.
Depending on the medication, you'll give yourself the injection daily, or once a week on the same day each week. It can be done at any time of day, and you can take it with or without food.
Your first appointment will be used to gather labs, consents, and have a complete primary care visit to ensure this is the right medication for you. Also at that time, we will review diet, and exercise, discuss expectations and give you all of the instructions needed for safely administering this medication at home.
THE GOAL IS TO LOSE 1-2 LBS/WEEK AND AT THE LEAST EFFECTIVE DOSING.
For refills, you must schedule a follow-up weight management appointment. An appointment is required for refills, so we can do an examination and weight check-in.
